What Assisted Living Actually Costs in Battle Creek (With Real Numbers)
If you are searching for the cost of assisted living in Battle Creek, you have probably noticed something frustrating: almost nobody will tell you a number. Most senior care websites ask you to call for pricing, and most families end up sitting through a tour before anyone mentions money.
We think that is backwards. So here are our real numbers.
The short answer
At Crestwood East, our residents today pay between $3,800 and $5,000 a month, depending on the room and how much help they need.
Shared rooms start at $3,800 per month. Private rooms start at $4,500 per month. Higher care needs can run above this range, and your exact monthly rate is put in writing before you sign anything.
The starting rate is not rent. It is care.
Here is the part most families do not expect: the starting rate already includes the baseline of daily care, not just a room.
At $3,800 for a shared room or $4,500 for a private one, your loved one gets a furnished room, home-cooked meals and snacks from our kitchen, medication management, daily activities and programming, housekeeping and laundry, all utilities including central air, and staff awake and on duty around the clock, every night.
So if your loved one is mostly independent, needs their medications handled, wants real meals and people around, the starting rate is close to their real rate. There is no long list of add-ons for the basics, because the basics are the point.
Personal items like clothing, toiletries, salon visits, and prescription costs remain with the family, the same as they would anywhere.
How the price goes up from there
We do not use one-size care tiers. When your loved one needs hands-on help beyond the baseline, Whitney, our Administrator, sits down with them and goes through their day item by item: bathing, dressing, moving safely, and everything in between. Each kind of help is priced on its own, the way home care is priced, and only the help your loved one actually needs gets added to the base rate.
That is why we cannot quote an exact number over the phone, and why we will not guess. The assessment sets the price, and you receive the exact monthly rate in writing before any paperwork is signed. No surprises on the first bill, because the first bill matches the number you already saw.
Your base rate is then locked for 12 months. The only exception is a significant change in care needs, and any change is discussed with you and put in writing before it takes effect.
The one-time community fee
There is a one-time community fee of $2,000. It covers the work that happens before move-in: processing the application and paperwork, the pre-admission assessment and service plan, medication record setup, preparing the room, and orienting our staff to your loved one’s needs. It also holds the room while paperwork is completed.
If we cannot meet your loved one’s needs and cancel the admission, the fee is refunded in full. If a qualifying event such as a death or a hospitalization prevents move-in within the first 14 days after signing, all but $500 is refunded. Once your loved one moves in, the fee is fully earned. How families pay for it
Most of our families use one or a combination of these:
Private funds. Savings, retirement income, or family members sharing the monthly cost. Often this follows the sale of a home.
VA Aid and Attendance. Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for a monthly benefit that helps pay for care. Many families have never heard of it. You can confirm eligibility and the exact amount with an accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO), a free advocate who helps veterans apply for benefits, or with the VA directly.
Long-term care insurance. If your loved one holds a policy, it may cover part of the monthly cost. We can help you understand what your policy paperwork requires.
